*I received Golden Star Beauty Self-Tanner as compliments of Golden Star Beauty. All opinions on the products are my own and honest reviews of them.*
Everyone’s favorite pale blogger is back with a second self-tanner review. Last summer I tried self-tanner for the first time and it’s now my new lifeline. About a month ago, Golden Star Beauty contacted me asking if I wanted to try out their products. After researching their products, I found it to be a good fit because it’s vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, and contains certified organic ingredients. So, I placed my order and waited for them to arrive to bring you a Golden Star Beauty Self-Tanner review.
I have a lot of love for the one self-tanner that I’ve tried so I was a little skeptical to try it out. The same concerns I had when I first tried self-tanner were back. I didn’t want to look orange, however, since we all can’t leave our houses anyway right now, I figured there was no better time to try it out. I tried two of their products: Sunless Tanning Lotion and Self Tan Serum for Face.
This was now my first time trying a self-tanner for my face. Truth be told, last summer I would self-tan my body and just use a darker shade of foundation to make it match. I was excited to see how this would work out for me while also hoping it wouldn’t severely break out my skin (spoiler alert: it didn’t).
A Little Bit About Golden Star Beauty
Here are some quick facts:
- All our products are paraben-free, cruelty-free, vegan, gluten-free, and made with certified organic oils and extracts
- Straight from their Amazon page, “Made in the USA under strict quality control and featuring CERTIFIED ORGANIC OILS (olive oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, avocado oil), ORGANIC ALOE VERA, HYALURONIC ACID and INTENSE MOISTURIZERS. Our self-tanning lotion is also PARABEN-FREE, DYES FREE, GLUTEN-FREE, VEGAN, and CRUELTY-FREE.”
- The sunless tan lasts from 3-5 days, depending on your skin type and how many layers you applied.
- One 8 fl. oz. bottle contains enough oil for 8-10 full body applications.
- Before applying the self-tanner, exfoliate (preferably 24 hours in advance) and moisturize dry skin areas such as the elbows, knees, wrists, and ankles. This prevents the tanning oil or serum from clinging to the dry patches and causing a blotchy finish. Once your skin is prepped, apply self-tanner in circular motions with a clean tanning glove/mitt (unless otherwise advised by the product label)
- You can find them on Amazon or on their website
My overall experience using Sunless Tanning Lotion
Color: Buildable. There isn’t a specific “light bronze” or “dark bronze” option here.
Dry time: Approx. 15 minutes
Orange risk: Medium. If you apply it carefully and don’t put too much around “bendable areas” like your knees, wrists, ankles, and elbows you’ll be fine. But if you’re like me and you just put it on really fast without much precision. In that case, some areas turn a little more orange than the rest if you’re not careful.
Natural-looking: My brother told me over FaceTime that it looks like I have actually been out in the sun for once, so I’d say it’s natural-looking. Because if brothers are good for one thing, it’s telling you when you look dumb.
Struggles: As opposed to the other self-tanner I use; the color isn’t as “instant” but the color is really glowy and natural after a few hours to a day. You also can’t use a normal moisturizer afterward which I like to do since you have to exfoliate and shave before applying the product, but the lotion is a bit moisturizing so you don’t feel like a dry-monster walking around.
Lasting: Obviously the more showers you take, the faster it will disappear, but I found that mine lasted almost a week.
Scent: It’s not too strong but it does have a nice almond-y scent to it that reminds me of the beach.
Overall happiness with the product: I really liked it from the scent to the color that appeared. I also loved that a mitt is offered in this product as well because it made all the difference and kept my hands from looking orange. It’s transfer-resistant.
My overall experience using Self Tan Serum for Face
Dry time: Approx. 15 minutes
Orange risk: low if you follow the directions.
Natural-looking: If you follow the directions and apply it first to places that naturally tan first in the sun (forehead, bridge of your nose, cheeks, and chin) then wiping off the access of your lips, eyelids, eyebrows, and any acne or scars then it does look incredible. Aside from making your face look naturally bronzed, it overall just makes you look fantastic. It has anti-aging, deeply hydrating, and revitalizing properties. It helps you slow down skin aging, improve your skin’s tone and elasticity. So, I’m all for that.
Struggles: Honestly, I had zero struggles here.
Lasting: Because you do wash your face at least twice a day, it fades quicker than your body. I found it really lasts 3-4 days.
Scent: It has a slight almond-y smell, but you can hardly smell it in my opinion.
Overall happiness with the product: It doesn’t clog your pores. It makes your face look like it was naturally tanned in the sun. I’m honestly obsessed with it. It has rosehip oil to add to the moisturizing aspect since you can’t put your normal facial moisturizer on for 3-4 hours. It’s transfer-resistant.
Before and After Using Sunless Tanning Lotion and Self Tan Serum for Face
This time around, I was a good blogger and painted my nails for the photo. But again, I failed in the before and after pictures, so these are the best that I did.
