Taylor Swift’s Lover Album is Your Dazzling Daydream Brought to Life

I have never felt more connected to a soul, let alone someone that I have never even met, as I have with Taylor Swift. I’ve talked about the first time that I saw her in concert during the reputation era and my love for her there. It was magical and it was everything. But Lover is different. Lover is my soul’s words expressed by someone else in the most eloquent and perfect way. I picked up her Deluxe Lover Album Version 2 at Target this afternoon and I cried.

Inside the Lover album, she has written a foreword that is quite literally my thoughts about life that I’ve always had. Then she has selected journal excerpts she had written since she was thirteen. And I cried. It really felt like she was speaking my thoughts – in a more successful way than I ever could though, obviously. I have cried about everything Lover because it has entered a time in my life where everything is changing. Lover speaks to me in ways that I’m not sure how to describe but will try my best to.

I like to daydream. I always have. When I was young to now, I daydream about my life. Daydreams about my own lover, my future friends that I have yet to meet or my future children that I already love beyond belief. I daydream about the big things and the little things. Daydreams about my future home but also the late-night slow dancing in the living room with my lover. Or the way the daylight will shine in through the picture windows and warm a spot on the couch. I’ve just always been enthralled by romance and love. I will forever stand by the notion that love is the closest thing to magic we get as humans. Burning red or golden – it’s always worth it.

Lover Album

If you’re looking for an in-depth critical analysis of the Lover album, this isn’t it. This is a hopeless romantic, daydreamer, and Taylor Swift loving woman’s take on the album. This album is as if 1989, Red, and reputation had a baby. This album is Taylor’s best work. There are no skips. It’s a lyrical and production masterpiece. Her writing is unmatched. As Taylor said, the Lover album is a love letter to love. And we love that.

Lover Album: Track by track

Forgot That You Existed

Favorite Line: “And I would’ve stuck around for ya / Would’ve fought the whole town, so yeah / Would’ve been right there front row / Even if nobody came to your show”

This was the perfect opener for the album because it was a way of saying goodbye to the reputation era. It’s forgetting everything that was and moving on with your head up. Even if you think something was going to kill you, you’re going to find one day that it didn’t. There’s going to be a day one day when you realize whatever has been weighing on you and constantly on your mind just isn’t anymore. And it will be peaceful.

Cruel Summer

Favorite Line: “And I scream ‘For whatever it’s worth / I love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?’ / He looks up grinning like a devil”

Cruel Summer is totally a continuation of Getaway Car and you can’t convince me otherwise. The gritty chant thing she does revived my entire being and she needs to do more of that. There was something about this song that felt like a desperate love that was on fire and burned out just as quickly as it ignited. It was doomed from the start.

Lover

Favorite Line: “And I’m highly suspicious / That everyone who sees you wants you / I’ve loved you 3 summers now, honey / But I want them all / Can I go where you go? / Can we always be this close?”

This was entirely written by Taylor and it’s one of the best songs on the album. She’s finally writing about her love. Her final love. The love that she has been waiting her whole life for. Honestly, this song feels like putting up your Christmas tree in dim lighting with a glass of wine and everything is peaceful and okay in your life. Like how you feel with your lover; safe and secure. If this isn’t your wedding song one day, are you okay? And can we talk about the music video for this? So much symbolism with every room in the dollhouse representing each album and the fishbowl. It was genius.

The Man

Favorite Line: “They’d say I hustled / Put in the work / They wouldn’t shake their heads and question / how much of this I deserve”

Okay, but Taylor snapped so hard here. This is the feminist iconic bop we deserve. She has been in the spotlight and shattering records and being a trailblazer since she was 14 years old. And all she does is get ridiculed and questioned because she is a woman. If a man would have done exactly what she has, everyone would worship him. And that doesn’t just apply to Taylor, it applies to everyone that isn’t a white man. We are not here for this double-standard anymore and we’re speaking out about it.

The Archer

Favorite Line: ” I wake in the night / I pace like a ghost / The room is on fire / Invisible smoke / And all my heroes / Die all alone”

We’ve all be the archer and we’ve all been the prey at some points in our life. This song hit me hard when I first heard it. The invisible smoke is the perfect way to describe your inner storms. You feel like your whole life is on fire but the people around you don’t see the smoke. They don’t see what you’re freaking out about. It’s a lot like anxiety. It’s a lot like any inner storm you have going on.

I Think He Knows

Favorite Line: “I am an architect, I’m drawing up the plans / He’s so obsessed with me and boy / I understand / Boy I understand”

Her falsettos on this track were insane. It reminded me of All You Had To Do Was Stay when in the chorus “stay” was so highly pitched but in the most perfect way to convey that. The chorus is just so catchy and makes me also want to skip down 16th Avenue. The confidence and self-esteem in this song are top notch and makes you feel incredible, at least for me it did. It’s just a really cute song about both mutually just knowing but not saying anything yet.

Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince

Favorite Line: “It’s you and me / That’s my whole world / They whisper in the hallway / She’s a bad bad girl / The whole school is rolling fake dice / You play stupid games / You win stupid prizes”

This song is extremely executed well and it’s a feature-length film in itself. Do I want a music video of this? No. I want a full movie of this. This also has So It Goes vibes and since y’all slept on that she had to drop this one on us. It feels like when your whole world is falling apart and that everyone is against you and trying to turn that one last person against you in any way that you can. Basically, this feels like “here’s a toast to my baby, he ain’t reading what they call me lately” extended. And we love that.

Paper Rings

Favorite Line: “Kiss me once ’cause you know I had a long night / Kiss me twice ’cause it’s gonna be all right / Three times ’cause you know I waited my whole life”

I died when I heard this song. It has the sweetest 60s/70s vibe to it and the scene from the ME! music video that’s 60s/70s is what I picture for this song. This song made my romantic heart burst and daydream really hard. The lyrics were relatable between trying to find the person you just became interested in the Internet to also really telling details about Taylor like when she said she read all the books beside his bed. That’s love, y’all. It was really hard to pick just a single line from this song that was my favorite because I absolutely adore this song.

Cornelia Street

Favorite Line: “And I hope I never lose you / Hope it never ends / I’d never walk Cornelia street again / That’s the kind of heartbreak / Time could never mend”

This song hurt so much it felt good. Cornelia Street is All Too Well except he stayed. It is just as personal, detailed, and so many feelings poured into it that brings you there. It brings you to what Taylor experienced and it allows you to attach your own meanings to it. Which I feel is like every song but particularly this one. Once you find your lover it can still bring anxiety and doubts because it’s still a relationship after all. I’ve had this one on repeat a lot.

Death By A Thousand Cuts

Favorite Line: “Flashbacks waking me up / I get drunk but’s not enough ’cause / The morning comes and / You’re not my baby / I look through the windows of this love / Even though we boarded them up”

Taylor said she was inspired to write this breakup song after watching a Netflix movie. I’m really over the moon that Taylor found her forever love but it wouldn’t be a Taylor album without a breakup song. She writes them too well to not write them anymore. I would compare this to Maddie and Tae’s Die From a Broken Heart. Both of these songs just capture brutal breakups so well and, oddly, beautifully. But that just might be the romantic in me that can tend to romanticize a lot of things. This song hurts so good and it destroyed me in the best way.

Lover Album

London Boy

Favorite Line: “They say home is where the heart is / But that’s not where mine lives”

Another romantic bop and I thought it was Joe talking in the start but it isn’t. According to the lyric booklet, it’s Idris Elba and James Cordon. I always thought it was so cute when couples come together from different places and learn about that lifestyle and finding certain things endearing about it. Sorta like Morgan Evans (Australian) who wrote American for who can only I assume was Kelsea Ballerini. It’s just endearing and sweet.

Soon You’ll Get Better ft The Dixie Chicks

Favorite Line: “And I hate to make this all about me / But who am I supposed to talk to? / What am I supposed to do? / If there’s no you”

This is another song that hurt so bad but it’s too beautiful and a wonderful gift for her mom. She wrote this for her mom battling breast cancer and she got her mom’s favorite band to be on the song. I don’t know what else to say about this because the song really speaks for itself and makes you cry. You can hear the absolute devastation and scared feeling in Taylor’s voice that is unlike really anything that she has written before. We went from Best Day to this and as much of a beautiful song it is and she should be proud of it, It’s heartbreaking that it had to be written, you know?

False God

Favorite Line: “We were crazy to think / Crazy to think that this could ever work / Remember how I said I’d die for you / We were stupid to jump / In the ocean separating us / Remember how I’d fly for you / And I can’t talk to you when you’re like this / Staring out the window like I’m not your / favorite town – I’m New York City”

Sexy Taylor is the best Taylor. This woman is nearing thirty and just started serving us her more sexual songs with reputation. Which makes sense because of the death of her reputation and all…Anyways, again, the confidence in this song is unmatched. Her saying she IS New York City? Powerful.

You Need To Calm Down

Favorite Line: “Say it in the street, that’s a knock out / But you say it in a tweet, that’s a cop-out / And I’m just like hey / Are you ok?”

This song? Iconic. This song is a middle finger to literally all the people that are being gross in this horrendous political atmosphere we are unfortunately in. If one more person says that singers/actors/etc. needs to keep to their craft rather than getting political need to remember we have a washed-up, Cheeto of a reality star that’s currently sitting in – and destroying – the Oval Office. Taylor’s right, y’all need to calm down about things that have nothing to do with and keep your negativity to yourself.

Afterglow

Favorite Line: “Fighting with a true love / Is boxing with no gloves / Chemistry ’til it blows up, ’til there’s no us”

Boy, did I feel this one. I’m definitely the type to either hold everything in and then blow up or make myself think there is a problem because things are going too well. But then once it’s all in the open and I realize I hurt someone that I love with what I said then I feel worse and I just want to make everything better. To literally be in the afterglow of an argument. Where everything is out, worked through, and quiet but with love.

ME! ft. Brendon Urie of P!ATD

Favorite Line: “I know that I went psycho on the phone / I never leave well enough alone / And trouble’s gonna follow where I go / And there’s a lot of cool chicks out there / But one of these things is not like the others / Like a rainbow with all of the colors / Baby doll when it comes to a lover / I promise that you’ll never find another like me

This was such a hit or miss for people when it was released but I love it. It’s cheesy but it’s such a confidence booster and it makes it nearly impossible to be sad when I have it on. In the album version, she did remove, “hey kids, spelling is fun!”. This is a fun, lightweight, carefree song that doesn’t even scrape the surface of this album. But that’s the point. Hello, Look What You Made Me Do and Shake it Off?

Lover Album Foreword

It’s Nice To Have A Friend

Favorite Line: “Light pink sky / Up on the roof / Sun sinks down / No curfew / 20 questions / We tell the truth / You been stressed out lately / Yeah me too”

I saw someone on Twitter saying this song felt like Pretty Little Liars and it felt haunting but in a good way. And I couldn’t have described this song better. But at the same time, this song is really wholesome and cute. Once you do lose everything and look around and everyone is gone and there’s that one person that reaches out to you and makes everything feel like it’s going to be okay. You appreciate the simple things. The writing, again, is unmatched and simple and beautiful.

Daylight

Favorite Line: “I don’t wanna look at anything else now that I saw you / I don’t wanna think of anything else now that I thought of you / I’ve been sleeping so long in a twenty-year dark night / And now I see daylight / I only see daylight”

This brought Red back into the mix with, “and I can still see it all in my mind” and “I once believed love would be burning red but it’s golden like daylight”. And the words that she spoke at the end of this song to end everything that is this album made me cry. I couldn’t agree more with her saying that you are what you love. You shouldn’t be defined by your fears or things you hate or what haunts you in the middle of the night. Love is the saving grace of the world. Above all else, love will rise. Always. And once you realize that and find that love, it will feel like daylight – warm, comforting, and light. A perfect and symbolic song to end the album with.

And so there you have it. Taylor’s seventh studio album is here and she’s perfect. It’s the only thing that matters and the only thing that we are listening to from now on. Well, that is until Kelsea Ballerini’s third studio album drops and we will listen to both of them until the end of time.

Music and love are the two things that are the closest things we have to magic. They are the two things that I feel are why we are here on this Earth.

Steam Lover album. Buy Lover album. Tell your family and friends about Lover album. Support Lover album era. I’m ready to live in the Lover album era cloud. Because it is beautiful. We have never stanned so hard.
